Baseball Falls to Wilkes on the Road

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. (April 15, 2022) – The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team fell to MAC Freedom opponent Wilkes by a score of 5-3 on Friday, April 15. Junior Michael Reyes led the Ducks with two hits going 2 for 4 at the plate.

Graduate student Hunter Silvernail went 1 for 4 with an RBI and sophomore Christian Kreiser added two RBI as well. Junior Justin Doyle (3-1) struck out six and gave up only two runs in six innings, but he was credited with the loss. Stevens fell to 21-10 overall and 8-5 in conference play with the loss.

Junior Jason Spezzaferra led the Colonels with three hits and went 3 for 4 on the day with an RBI. Junior AJ Brosious also contributed for Wilkes with two hits and an RBI. The Colonels improved to 16-13 overall and 4-9 in conference play with the win.

Wilkes took a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Brosious and Spezzaferra each had RBI singles to give the Colonels the early advantage. No more runs were scored until Stevens cut the lead in half in the sixth inning. Silvernail singled to left field and brought junior Ben Tobio home to make the score 2-1.

Junior Anthony Pron came in to pitch in the seventh inning and gave up one in the seventh and two in the eighth and the Ducks trailed 5-1 headed into the final inning of the day. Kreiser looked to give Stevens a spark when he came in to pinch hit in the ninth and brought in two runs on a single down the left field line to make the score 5-3. Unfortunately, the late surge was not enough and junior Sawyer Kemp secured the save for Wilkes. Senior Tony Molitoris (2-2) received the win.

“Tough loss on the road today. The Wilkes pitcher, Molitoris, did a nice job pounding the zone with strikes and we just couldn’t seem to get anything going until the sixth inning onward. We made a run at it late which we have come to expect every time from our team, but unfortunately we ended up falling a bit short in this one,” said head coach Kristaps Aldins. “Justin Doyle gave us a fantastic spot start in place of Jordan Fisse and gave us a chance to win the game”

Up Next: Stevens hosts Wilkes in a doubleheader tomorrow at home on Dobbelaar Field. Game times are set for 12:00 pm and 3:00 pm and the Ducks will honor their seniors as well.
